You may obtain relevant veterinary medicinal products for your pet from your veterinary surgeon OR ask for a written prescription so that you can obtain these medicines from another veterinary surgeon or a pharmacy. The cost of a written prescription is currently £16.00, plus £7.20 for each additional medication on the prescription.
Your veterinary surgeon can only prescribe relevant veterinary medicinal products following a clinical assessment of the pet under his or her care. The general policy of this practice is to re-assess a pet requiring repeat prescriptions or supplies of relevant veterinary medicinal products every 3 months, but this may vary with individual circumstances. The standard charge for a re-examination consultation is currently £41.10
Please note that a written prescription may not be appropriate in all cases and in particular for pets that are in-patients or in cases where immediate treatment is necessary.
